Description

Consider the advancements in mobile equipments there is a urgent need to identify alternative power sources or chargers. Mechanical devices such as shaking light are attractive products on those lines but they also came very recently replacing traditional battery lights. The reason the shake light appeared only recently is because it only became practical after the development of high efficiency LED flashlights. The LED uses very little power, which is what makes it practical. A cell phone uses a lot more power than an LED flashlight. This is because it has to have a radio transmitter capable of generating a powerful enough signal to communicate with a cell tower that may be miles away. And as in usual cases we are looking for power from sun again. Solar telephone and solar chargers researches have increased in the recent past. This could be a great way to spread mobile phone use in parts of the third world where electricity isn’t readily available.

Why

Mobile telephones and solar-powered telephone kiosks aid trade in Uganda. The investment has given hundreds of thousands of Ugandans the opportunity to do business quickly and easily, look for jobs and talk to friends and family without wasting valuable time.

  • The Solar charger works on more than 40 types of mobile phones (Nokia, Sony-Ericsson, Siemens, Motorola, Samsung etc.)
  •  Applicable anywhere without worrying about unavailable power source, different voltages, or unsuitable sockets
  • All you need is free sunlight
  • Pocket-sized, can be carried around easily
  • Battery box can serve as an instant power source when your electronic devices run out of electricity.

There were previously 4000 telephone users, and now there are 311,000. In addition, 1800 mobile telephone kiosks have been built, powered by solar cells in areas with no electricity. Mobile telephony is a technological breakthrough that fundamentally changes the lives of the rural population.Ethiopian Telecommunications Corporation is connecting Ethiopia to the future. The mobile phone network of ETC is reaching even the remote villages. But electricity is often not available.

How

With a solar energy business box, one can offer telephone services and mobile phone charging powered with a 40W solar panel. The power is available day and night, and is sufficient to charge up to six phones per day. The tracking mechanism consists of a dc motor encapsulated in an aluminum pipe forming part of the structure and being driven by a bi-facial solar photovoltaic module, fixed at an angle of 75° relative to the PV array.

  • When the sun shines on one face of the pilot solar module, a potential difference is created and the motor rotates the tube towards the sun.
  • When the modules face the sun, the bi-facial pilot solar module would be almost perpendicular to the solar beam
  • The potential difference between the two facades would not be sufficient to further rotate the solar array.
  • When the sun moves in the sky, it will start shining on the other face of the pilot module.
  • As the day goes by, the tracker closely follows the sun along its path.
  • The full span of the tracker is about 120° from East to West.

Analysis of data and comparison to the performance of the tracking system to the stationary system is underway. A preliminary analysis showed that tracking could yield up to 67% higher output between spring and autumn, and could operate at higher efficiency. This implies that in order to produce a certain amount of electric energy, up to 40% less roof area would be needed for a tracking system. Keeping in mind that the tracking system would have up to 1.66 times more final yield than a stationary system, one can easily conclude that for two systems with equal annual electrical energy outputs, the total capital investment would be about 20% lower for the tracking system that uses this type of tracking mechanism. Within the confinements of the limited data available to date, it can be concluded that a 1.8 kWp stationary system operating in Malta would be equivalent to a 1.1 kWp tracking system.

Future Trends

The South African mobile telephone company MTN is managing the expansion on behalf of the Ugandan Government. To increase the pace, it turned to Sida for guarantees for further loans.Sida agreed to a guarantee to cover the risks that the local institutions could not carry. This allowed new money to be released and invested in MTN. The pace of expansion has now increased and tens of thousands of Ugandans will have access to mobile telephony earlier than expected. Sida's guarantees have allowed local investors to invest a further 50 MSEK in the expansion of telephony in Uganda. The guarantees do not cost Sweden anything as long as the investment makes a profit.
