Satyam launches industry's first engineering development training program
Satyam Computer Services Ltd has announced the launch of Satyam Entry-Level Engineering Development program called the SEED. A first-of-its-kind in the industry, SEED is a 4 months training program for the entry level engineers. It is aimed at building a quality resource pool to support engineering programs of global clients.

US Engineering Services Industry Report
US Engineering Services Industry Report
Published Date: February 2008
Published By: First Research, Inc.
Abstract
The US engineering services industry is highly fragmented, comprising 45,000 mainly small companies with combined annual revenue of $90 billion. Large companies include Jacobs Engineering Group and URS Corporation, as well as the engineering divisions of large construction companies like Fluor and Bechtel. Almost half the firms in the industry are small, with fewer than five employees. The 50 largest firms account for only 35 percent of industry revenue. About 100 firms have more than $100 million of annual revenue.
COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE
Demand is driven largely by the construction needs of companies and governments and the desire of industrial customers to improve the efficiency of their operations. Profitability depends on the ability to accurately predict costs for a project. Small firms, which can effectively compete with larger ones by having expertise in a particular field, are often hired as consultants on larger projects if they have special expertise. Large firms have the advantage in designing and managing large projects. Average revenue per employee is about $150,000 for large firms, $110,000 for small ones.
PRODUCTS, OPERATIONS & TECHNOLOGY
Engineering services include a wide variety of activities, including product design, industrial process design, construction design and management, systems engineering, and maintenance and operations. Engineering companies may be involved in projects that require skills in analysis, design, project management, operations, or all four. Most firms specialize in a particular type of engineering. The potential for process engineering, plant automation and enterprise asset management services lies relatively unexamined. Industry estimates peg the market potential for process engineering, asset management and industrial embedded systems at over $5 bn taking the total outsourced/offshore market potential to approximately $12 bn. This estimate takes into account the outsourcing opportunity that would arise from mechanical engineering design, construction engineering design, electrical engineering design, embedded systems and chip design, instrumentation and controls design, manufacturing and tool design, industrial design, product lifecycle management (PLM) and software product engineering.
Of the $750 billion global engineering-services market today, only about $10-$15 billion is offshored. India accounts for about 12% of the total offshore market, that is somewhere between $1.2 billion-$1.8 billion. This could go up to $40 billion by 2020.
This implies an increase in India's share to approximately 20%-25% of the total offshored market, which is likely to grow to $150-$250 billion by that time. Offshore engineering services is one area where India does not have a dominant market share, unlike most other offshore services segments and sub-segments.
The Black Book of Outsourcing research service titled TOP ENGINEERING SERVICES OUTSOURCING VENDORS 2007 provides an in-depth competitive analysis of the highest 20 ranked ESO suppliers globally, including India. The study examines the customer responses and satisfaction scores on eighteen specific criteria within the ESO market space and details each positioned vendor in several major functional areas.
